Collection: Johanna Spyri
Johanna Spyri, 1827 to 1901, grew up in a Swiss village and set her story in the mountains she actually knew, which is why the place in the book feels like a place rather than scenery. Heidi appeared in 1880 and 1881.
The structure is the clever part. She gives the child everything plain and good: hard beds, goat's milk, open air, work to do, and an old man who loves her without saying so. Then she takes all of it away and puts her in a wealthy city house with servants, soft furniture and nothing to do, where she quietly sickens for home.
No lecture is needed after that. Children learn that where you are, and who keeps you, shapes what you become.
