Collection: St. John the Evangelist

By long tradition the Gospel of St. John is the last of the four to be written, set down decades after the events by a disciple who had carried them a lifetime. It shows. Where the other three recount what happened, John is occupied with what it meant, and the book has a weight the others do not attempt.

He appears in our catalogue as companion material rather than as a headline author. In the Trumpet edition of Black Beauty his Gospel sits beside the life of a horse, which sounds strange until you read them together. Both put the same question to the reader: what does a man do with power over something that cannot argue back, cannot complain, and cannot leave.
