Collection: Sun Tzu
The Art of War is traditionally attributed to Sun Tzu, a general placed by custom around the fifth century BCE, in a period when the Chinese states fought almost without pause. Scholars still argue over the man and the date. What is not in doubt is the book, which is the shortest and hardest-headed thing ever written on conflict.
His argument runs against instinct. The best victory is the one you were never forced to fight for. Know the ground before you commit to it. Know the other side better than they know themselves. Refuse the battle you cannot afford, however much your pride wants it. Deception, timing, supply, morale, and the handling of information all matter more than courage on the day.
Twenty-five centuries later it is read by people who will never see a battlefield: anyone who tenders, negotiates, competes, or runs a crew. The benefit is immediate. You stop swinging at every fight you are offered.
