Volume IV of Plutarch's Parallel Lives pairs two Spartan kings who tried to restore a fading republic, Agis and Cleomenes, with two Roman brothers who tried the same thing a century later and met the same end, Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus. It closes with the life of Cicero, the man who watched Rome's republic die and spoke against its killers until the day they killed him too.
Plutarch did not write these as history. He wrote them as character studies, set side by side on purpose, so a reader could see what the same virtue costs a Greek and a Roman, a king and a tribune, centuries apart.
Why this restoration
This edition preserves the Aubrey Stewart and George Long translation in full, first published in 1894, modernized in typography and formatting only. Nothing has been abridged, softened, or brought into line with contemporary sensibility. The comparisons Plutarch wrote between each pair of lives are restored to their original place, not relegated to an appendix.
