Niccolò Machiavelli knew instability firsthand. He entered public service in Florence in 1498 and spent fourteen years in diplomatic and government work, travelling across Italy and to European courts. In 1512, the Medici returned to power and the Florentine Republic fell. Machiavelli lost office, and in 1513 he was imprisoned and tortured after being wrongly suspected of conspiracy. The Prince was written later that year, out of a world he had seen from the inside.

The line about storms comes from Chapter XXIV, where Machiavelli criticizes rulers who blame fortune for losing states they had held for years. His argument is that the failure began earlier, during the quiet period when they assumed conditions would continue as they were. Ricci’s translation says they had “never in quiet times considered that things might change.”

That problem still feels familiar.

Technology changes industries. Markets turn. Reputations move quickly. Institutions lose trust. Leaders continue using methods that worked under yesterday’s conditions. And people can consume enormous amounts of information without becoming any clearer about what is actually happening.

Machiavelli keeps returning to the same difficult requirement: read the circumstances accurately.

Chapter XXV develops the idea through Fortune, which he compares to a violent river. Floodwater can overwhelm everything in its path, but defenses can be built during calmer periods. Circumstance cannot be controlled completely, yet preparation and judgment still matter.

That is where The Prince becomes useful to the modern reader.
