Stevenson dedicated the book to a friend's “classic taste” and warned right on the first page, in verse, that if a reader doesn't want storms, islands, buccaneers, and buried gold told “exactly in the ancient way,” he and all his pirates would rather share a grave than bore them. Nobody has been bored by it since 1883.
